How To Identify The Number of Lone Pairs on an Atom Using Formal Charge:
Dots = Valence Electrons - [Formal Charge + Bonds]

(1)  Determine the number of valence electrons of the atom using the periodic table.

(2)  Count the number of bonds attached to the atom.  A double bond has a value of 2 and a triple bond has a value of 3.

(3)  Using The formal charge, plug in the values into the formula above.

A value of 1 indicates the atom is a radical.  2 dots indicate that there is 1 lone pair.  4 dots is equivalent to 2 lone pairs.  A value of 3 indicates the atom is a radical with a lone pair.
